On the 9th and the 10th February, a workshop on “Seismic Isolation, Research and Its Application” was held in the premises of the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology – IZIIS. The workshop was part of the programme “IZIIS for SKOPJE” to mark 60 years since the Skopje earthquake in 1963 and was supported by the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of North Macedonia.
Experience from experimental investigations and implementation of seismic isolation systems were shared by the representatives of IZIIS and the Japanese Society for Seismic Isolation (JSSI). For a moment, we reminded ourselves of the first implemented base isolation system on a structure with rubber bearings in Europe, the example of the primary school J. H Pestalozzi in Skopje, then numerous examples of seismic isolation and control of structures in daily modern construction in Japan.
The Institute are expressing their hope that domestic experience and knowledge supported by the Japanese recent knowledge will contribute to greater and wider implementation of such type of seismic protection on as greater number of structures as possible, not only in our country but in the region, as well. Also, the Institute and the participants are extending their thanks to the Embassy of Japan in the RNM and the representatives of the Japanese Society of Seismic Isolation for their unselfish support and sharing of the latest technologies and knowledge.
