Seismic screening of the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU)

Behind us are several extraordinary, intensive days filled with interesting educational workshops for the youngest. Our aspiration to provide well-being and improve the quality of life of our citizens leads us further.

In the period to come, we are focusing on activities under the motto “IZIIS for SKOPJE”, namely, on the seismic safety and security assessment of three structures that are of special interest to the city of Skopje: Macedonian Academy of Sciences and Arts (MANU), Museum of the city of Skopje and the Macedonian Radio Television – symbols of post-earthquake Skopje.

• We are reviewing the available technical documentation
• We are doing detailed visual inspections and control measurements for the structures
• We are learning more details about the structures from their owners
• We are carrying out experimental research on selected representative bearing elements by using equipment for non-destructive tests
• We are filling out IZIIS-form on rapid screening of seismic safety and security

Which instruments are we using?

• Sclerometer to define concrete strength
• An ultrasonic instrument for the definition of concrete strength by measurement of the ultrasound velocity inside the considered element.
• Profometer for detection of distribution and size of reinforcement bars and definition of thickness of the protective concrete layer.
• An instrument for defining dynamic characteristics by measurement of vibrations of structures under ambient effects

Which is our purpose?

• Pre-earthquake assessment of structures resistance and getting an insight into the level of safety of citizens and material goods.
• Mitigation of the risk and economic losses through prevention activities that provide information for decision-making based on the real conditions of structures.
