Irena Gjorgjeska, M. Sc, is a research geophysicist and PhD candidate in the field of Earthquake Engineering at the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology. She graduated from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje, Institute of Physics, Geophysics major, in 2007. During the same year, she was enrolled in the second cycle of international post-graduate studies held at the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS), Ss. Cyril and Methodius” University in Skopje. Her research specifically focusses on 2D and 3D modeling of terrain structure by use of an integrated approach involving different geophysical methods, a research topic in which, in 2014, she finished her post-graduate studies successfully defending her master thesis entitled: “Application of Surface Waves Methods for Soil Characterization“. Her research in this field she continues in the third cycle of studies, and at the moment as a PhD candidate she is working on her doctoral dissertation entitled ”3D Seismogeological Modeling of the Skopje Sedimentary Basin”. Presently, she is in charge of the geophysical surveys at IZIIS, whereat her main activities include research by application of different geophysical methods aimed at soil characterization, seismogeological and seismotectonic modeling of terrain structure as well as development and advancement of new geophysical techniques. Since 2007, she has actively participated in a large number of projects in the country and beyond like: NATO SpS-984374-Improvements of Harmonized Seismic Hazard Maps for the Western Balkan Countries, the project entitled “Assessment of Seismic Hazard and Risk for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi” (2010-2013), as principal investigator for the geophysical surveys, Geophysical Surveys of Nish – Plochnik Motorway, in R. Serbia – 2020 (as principal investigator for geophysical surveys), Geophysical Surveys – seismic reflection measurements at the location of Brestanica, Slovenia 2011, Seismic Microzonation of Prishtina, Ulpiana Settlement, etc. She has also taken part in a number of training programs and has been on study stays (Peter Bormann Young Seismologist Training Course (YSTC) – Array Seismology – ESC 36th GA, 2018, Malta, GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences: International Training Course on „Seismology, Seismic Data Analysis, Hazard Assessment and Risk Mitigation“, Istanbul, Turkey 2010, TIDES Advanced training School “Time-Dependent Seismology: Earthquakes, Volcanoes, Glaciers, Landslides, Reservoirs, etc”., Prague, 2018, Using Ambient Vibration Array Techniques for Site Characterization and Seismic Microzonation (training courses), NERIES project Istanbul, Turkey. She has published over 20 papers in proceedings of national and international conferences and has prepared more than 150 professional reports. Irena Gjorgjeska is a member of the Macedonian Association for Earthquake Engineering (MAEE) and the Macedonian Association for Geotechnics.
