The last week of February 2025, IZIIS team (Prof. Vlatko Sheshov, Prof. Zoran Rakicevic, Prof. Julijana Bojadjieva, Prof. Aleksandra Bogdanovic and Prof. Kemal Edip) embarked on a critical technical mission to Kahramanmaraş and Sakarya where the IZIIS team’s mission to build a more resilient future brought them together with the Department of Civil Engineering from Sakarya University and Kahramanmaraş University in Kahramanmaraş, Turkiye following the devastating 2023 earthquake.

The visit included:

  • Official meetings and memorandum signing with the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Kahramanmaraş University with Dean Prof. Dr. Mehmet Unsal
  • Thorough on-site assessments of damaged structures in Kahramanmaraş and surrounding regions
  • Visits to Sakarya University Faculty of Engineering including another memorandum signing with Chair Prof. Dr. Aşkın Özocak
  • Examination of rebuilt areas in the Sakarya region following the 1999 earthquake

This comprehensive visit facilitated exchange of expertise in earthquake engineering, seismic retrofitting and innovative construction techniques between the Institute of Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Sakarya University, and Kahramanmaraş University. The collaboration between teams reinforced the importance of international partnerships in addressing global challenges related to seismic risk.
